As in various pre-Columbian cultures of South America, Central America, and North America, the dog held great importance among the island Saladoids. It was a companion in daily life, a source of food, and a guide or escort in the afterlife. Several Saladoid sites in the Antilles have revealed canine burials associated with human burials. However, according to archaeozoological data, the type of dog used for food was not the same as the one that accompanied the dead.

Several other ornaments representing dogs have been unearthed at Vivé. Apart from ceramics, the Saladoids depicted canines on ornamental objects made of stone and wood, and in stone amulets. Additionally, dog bones and canines were crafted into ornamental and/or ritual pieces. Some of these objects have been discovered in funerary contexts.

The dog seems to have had less importance in the societies of the Troumassoid (700-1000 AD) and Suazoid (1000-1500 AD) phases, but it was still present among the indigenous peoples of the Antilles at the arrival of the Europeans. In the 17th century, Father Raymond Breton reported that the Caribs (Kalinagos)—already largely influenced by Europeans—raised dogs for hunting.

Chr.)
